The EU will be climate neutral<\/strong> in 2050. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to modernise the EU\u2019s economy and society and re-orient them towards a just and sustainable future. Reaching this target will require a broad spectrum of actions. Research and innovation<\/strong> will play a central role in it by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- accelerating and navigating\nthe necessary transitions,<\/li>
- deploying, demonstrating\nand de-risking solutions,<\/li>
- engaging citizens in social Innovation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
There are several policy areas<\/strong> of the EU Green Deal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Climate action<\/a> – making the EU climate neutral by 2050<\/li>
- Biodiversity<\/a> – measures to protect our fragile ecosystem<\/li>
- Eliminating pollution<\/a> – measures to cut pollution rapidly and efficiently<\/li>
- From Farm to Fork<\/a> – ways to ensure more sustainable food systems<\/li>
- Sustainable agriculture<\/a> – sustainability in EU agriculture and rural areas thanks to the common agricultural policy (CAP)<\/li>
- Clean energy<\/a> – opportunities for alternative, cleaner sources of energy<\/li>
- Sustainable industry<\/a> – ways to ensure more sustainable, more environmentally-respectful production cycles<\/li>
- Building and renovating<\/a> – the need for a cleaner construction sector<\/li>
- Sustainable mobility<\/a> – promoting more sustainable means of transport<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

To respond to the\nurgency and ambition of the European Green Deal objectives, Horizon 2020 will\nsupport additional Green Deal related research and innovation with a call worth close to \u20ac1 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Green Deal Call (GDC) will\nmobilise research and innovation to foster a just and sustainable societal\ntransition aiming at \u2018leaving nobody behind\u2019. Projects are expected to deliver tangible<\/strong> and visible<\/strong> results<\/strong>\nrelatively quickly<\/strong> and show how\nresearch and innovation can provide concrete solutions for the EU Green Deal\nmain priorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The call will support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- pilot applications,\ndemonstration projects and innovative products,<\/li>
- innovation for better\ngovernance of the green and digital transition, <\/li>
- social and value chain innovation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
In addition to\ntechnological development and demonstration, the call\nencourages experimentation and social innovation for new ways to engage\ncivil society and empower citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The call contains 11 areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Eight\nthematic areas <\/strong>reflecting\nthe key work streams of the European Green Deal. In each area, one or more\ntopics addresses the challenges outlined in the respective policy stream.\nTopics target specific, high-impact technological and societal innovations\nthat can help advance the sustainable transition relatively quickly.<\/li>
- Three\nhorizontal areas<\/strong>\n(strengthening knowledge; empowering citizens; and international cooperation)\nthat cut across the eight thematic areas and offer a longer-term perspective in\nachieving the transformations set out in the European Green Deal.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
A stakeholder feedback survey on the call areas ran from 19 May to 3 June, with almost 6000 survey responses and 500 documents were uploaded. Results of the survey are available on the call webpage<\/a><\/strong>, where <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most importantly, on the above website – divided\ninto 11 thematic areas – you can now download the draft text of the competition\ncall, along with EC slides discussing individual topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
